Parks

Keeping to our 10,000 Trees initiative, ReLeaf has organized and prioritized the planting of more trees at our Parks and Schools. ReLeaf’s target of 3,500 new trees at our parks and schools is more than halfway to completion.

ReLeaf is seeking sponsors for volunteer costs to help us with this project, contact releafpetaluma@gmail.com.

Petaluma Canopy Project Planting to be Completed January 2027

The City of Petaluma, with ReLeaf’s help, applied for and received a large grant from the USDA Forest Service in 2024. As prime contractor, ReLeaf saw to the siting, purchasing, and planting of over 2,100 trees in Parks, Schools, Open Spaces, Roadsides, Creeksides, and other public spaces. ReLeaf’s work on this grant draws to a close in January 2027, with our partner Rebuilding Together Petaluma taking over the remaining 2 years of tree watering and maintenance. There were hundreds of trees planted in local parks, including Crinella Pocket Park, Grant Park, Lucchesi Park, Del Oro Park, Petaluma Sports Center, Steamer Landing Park, and McDowell Meadows Park. We accomplished these plantings with thousands of volunteer hours from dedicated ReLeaf volunteers over the years! Our grant also provided funds to buy a very useful UTV, which has been a huge help.

Six Parks and Six Parks II Projects—Plantings completed December, 2023

Working with our funders and partners, we planted 592 native shade trees at 12 popular Petaluma Parks:  Bond, Glenbrook, Sunrise, Southgate, Lucchesi, Meadow View, Miwok, Fox Hollow, La Tercera, Turnbridge, Grant and Anna’s Meadow. In addition we planted 33 trees in the Landscape Assessment District of Turtle Walk development, along Adobe Creek. Please take a stroll through the 12 parks and enjoy the new trees. We also purchased this awesome electric riding mower, to assist the City in the tighter mowing around our trees.

Thank you to our funders and partners.

And, thanks to these generous sponsors who made the volunteer experience special:
Redwood Credit Union, Petaluma Rotary, Jane Hamilton and Clarice Stasz.

The Lind Family

The city was our partner in the tree planting at Wiseman Park, acting as our fiscal sponsor and performing a great deal of work such as running drip irrigation lines. The new trees were planted on April 9, 2022, with a community partner supplying volunteers. We look forward to lots more projects collaborating with the city and other community partners.

Wiseman Park is next to the airport, so these trees will directly mitigate pollution and heat generated by airport activity. A long walking/bicycle trail, will be shaded by the 163 new trees (151 canopy trees and 12 understory trees).

Thank you to our terrific funders CalFire and California ReLeaf, and to our kind sponsors Howard Formby Garden Design, the Lind Family, and Friedman’s Home Improvement.

Other Parks

ReLeaf has prepared drawings for adding trees at other Petaluma parks. Our talented and experienced volunteers are creating tree plans for all of the parks and Landscape Assessment Districts. These plans will be submitted for city and community approval, and ReLeaf will raise funds for the trees. Watering plans will be developed with the city.  We can all look forward to cooler trails, picnic areas, and sports fields, thanks to new canopy trees!
